Rapid Reaction: Orioles 18, Red Sox 7

BALTIMORE -- With the Boston Celtics getting eliminated by the Cleveland Cavaliers Sunday afternoon, the winter sports season in Boston is officially over.

Unless, of course, the Boston Red Sox continue on their present course. Which, after Sunday afternoon’s 18-7 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, looks an awful lot like downhill skiing, with the bottom of the hill nowhere in sight.

With Red Sox starter Wade Miley lasting only seven outs for the second time in four starts, Boston finished a 2-4 trip against AL East rivals Tampa Bay and Baltimore in cover-your-eyes fashion.

The Orioles batted around in both the third and seventh innings, scoring six runs in both innings, in running up the most runs against a Red Sox team since the Sons of Bobby Valentine lost, 20-2, in Oakland on Aug. 31, 2012.

The Orioles collected 20 hits off six Red Sox pitchers. Manny Machado was the only player in the Baltimore starting lineup to go hitless, and he walked and scored twice.

Miley’s early exit, precipitated by an inning in which he gave up five hits and walked two batters on a total of eight pitches, assured him of the worst month of his big-league career, one in which he posted an 8.62 ERA in four starts. It is of little comfort, of course, that this is the first month he has spent in the American League.

And the Orioles gave reliever Heath Hembree plenty of reason to regret he parachuted in from Pawtucket for the day, scoring six runs on six hits off him in 1 1/3 innings.

Face-saving measures for the Red Sox, who were shut out through the first six innings by Bud Norris (17.42 ERA coming in)? Pablo Sandoval hit a three-run home run, his first with the Sox and his first in 138 at-bats since the last time he went deep.

Hanley Ramirez added two first-pitch home runs, the first coming immediately after Sandoval connected, giving him eight home runs overall.

Brock Holt also reached base five times on two hits and three walks, while Dustin Pedroia had three hits.
