As many as 54 government middle or high schools in the district are either without teachers or with a single teacher.

However, at the same time the Education Department had deputed 36 Hindi teachers of the district to various other districts on deputation against set guidelines issued by the department itself.

According to information, more than 25 government schools out of 54 schools of the district are without teachers. The 36 Hindi teachers, who have been sent on a deputation basis, have been deputed in the Malwa belt specially in Ferozepur, Fazilka , Moga, Bathinda and Mansa districts. These teachers were sent more than one-and-a-half years ago before the start of the Lok Sabha elections last year. Sources said these teachers were selected for this district, but had been sent to other districts.

Balkar Singh Valtoha and Nachatar Singh, teachers’ representatives, said though the department had issued instructions against sending any of the employee on a deputation basis, the instructions had been violated by the department itself. The sources claimed that the government had done so only to “appease its own men”.

Five government middle schools in the district of Fazalpur, Drajke, Kalsai Khurd, Cheema Khurd and Thathia Khurd villages have been closed due to non-availability of teachers. In spite of repeated attempts, Balbir Singh Dhol, DPI (Secondary), could not be contacted.
