The South Avenue police post, located just 50 metres from Rashtrapati Bhavan, witnessed high drama recently. A woman came to the police post on April 22 to lodge a complaint against her husband, who, she alleged, assaulted her physically. Minutes later, the accused, who was allegedly inebriated, too reached the police post and started beating his wife in front of the policemen. When police tried to restrain him, he allegedly thrashed them too. The drama, which lasted around 25 minutes, ended with police arresting him.
“Around 8.45 pm, the women, identified as Sunita, came to the police post and complained to the duty officer against her husband, Ravikant alias Tony. She was in the process of lodging her complaint when her husband entered the police post and started abusing her,” a police officer said.

Constable Kuldeep Singh was on duty at the time. “The accused then started thrashing her in front of the policemen. Singh, along with other police personnel, tried to stop him. But the accused started thrashing them too and allegedly slapped Singh,” the officer said. The accused also allegedly tore off the police complaint register, he added.
Police personnel overpowered him, but he managed to free himself and started breaking the glasses of a door. Meanwhile, other police personnel took him in custody. “The woman was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was administered first aid. On the basis of Singh’s complaint, a case was registered under Sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 3 for damaging government property at Chanakyapuri police station,” the officer said.
On February 27, some residents of quarters on Rashtrapati Bhavan premises had allegedly thrashed two policemen of Chanakyapuri police station and tore off their uniform. To save themselves, both policemen locked themselves inside the police booth situated outside gate No. 30 of Rashtrapati Bhavan and then made a PCR call.
