As Prime Minister Narendra Modi completes one year in office next month, the BJP has planned to highlight his pet initiative Swachh Bharat Abhiyan by organising a day-long cleanliness drive at all 89 ghats by river Ganga in his Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi on May 3.
More than 2,500 party workers from Varanasi, party MLAs, MLCs, MPs of adjoining constituencies and Varanasi mayor Ram Gopal Mohle along with other national leaders belonging to Kashi region will pick up brooms to clean the ghats.
Party MLC and president of Kashi region Laxman Acharya told The Indian Express the drive is being undertaken to give a message to the public to keep the city and ghats clean. Ghats are a major tourist attraction in Varanasi and Modi too had started his cleanliness drive in Varanasi from Assi ghat.

While the Assi ghat was cleaned within a month, the poor condition of other ghats reportedly went unnoticed by the local administration.
Acharya said that party workers will participate in the drive to give a message that BJP and central government are firm on the commitment of cleanliness of city and Ganga river.
“The party has taken up the task to clean all the ghats from 8 am to 1 pm on May 3. Party workers have been directed to wear T-shirts with PM’s photo and party’s election symbol and saffron scarf during the drive,” said party’s regional media in-charge Sanjay Bhardwaj.
Meanwhile, the party workers in Varanasi have also been gifted tea-mugs carrying photographs of Modi and imprinted with words Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Sources said 1,000 mugs, that were sent from Delhi, have already been distributed and leaders have been directed to use them at local party offices.
