Arkansas governor: Same-sex marriage case too close to call

Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R-Ark.) on Sunday said it’s anyone’s guess as to what the Supreme Court will decide once it begins reviewing same-sex marriage in a case next week.

{mosads}“I think what the Supreme Court will do is very unpredictable,” Hutchinson said during a panel on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

The Supreme Court will hear opening arguments in a case on same-sex marriage on Tuesday. Hutchison said analyzing the final outcome was difficult given the issue’s previous track record.

“The Constitution has not changed,” he said.

“A lot of states have recognized same-sex marriages via judicial fiat,” Hutchinson continued. “The courts are really forcing this issue.”

The Arkansas governor additionally said he would continue supporting a traditional definition of marriage.

“That’s my conviction, and that’s my belief,” Hutchinson argued.

He added that ideology should not divide Americans while discussing the issue. After all, Hutchinson argued, much had changed in U.S. society over the years.

“There is a generational divide,” he said, citing his son’s views on the matter.

“We need to talk about this issue in terms of tolerance,” Hutchinson concluded.

An ABC News/Washington Post poll released on Wednesday showed support for same-sex marriage at a record high. It found 61 percent of Americans would support the practice if allowed nationwide.

The Supreme Court is expected to deliver a final verdict on the issue in June. It will decide whether or not there is a constitutional right to same-sex marriage.
