Two men opened fire at a sting operation expert, injuring him in the hand and killing his pet dog in Southwest Delhi’s Dabri area on Friday night. A case of attempt to murder has been registered against the men who are yet to be identified. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visited the victim, Chetan Sharma, on Saturday morning. Sharma, police said, is out on bail in an another attempt to murder case.

Sharma’s wife, Savita, told police that the men came on a motorcycle and opened fire at her husband while he was out walking their dog. “The men fired at my husband many times. He sustained two bullet wounds in the forearm. The dog took three bullets and died on the spot. My husband and I suspect members of a particular political party to be behind the attack. They were abusing my husband for making “stings and extorting money”. He had exposed them before the courts and they are now trying to take revenge. They have been threatening my husband for many days,” Savita told Newsline.

Police said Sharma had been assigned a personal security officer as ordered by the Delhi High Court but the guard, at the time of the incident, was seated in front of the house. Police said Sharma went out with the dog through the rear exit. Police said they have not been able to identify the assailants yet. “We have registered a case of attempt to murder under sections of the IPC. No arrest has been made yet,” DCP (Southwest) R A Sanjeev said.

According to police, Sharma has nine criminal cases against him. He was out on bail since last September in an attempt to murder case. He and his family claimed that the case was false and it was foisted on Sharma by his opponents.

The court too had expressed concern over Sharma’s credentials, instead of ordering the CBI to crack down on around 100 policemen who were stung by Sharma. He had submitted videos of policemen and excise officials allegedly demanding bribes, police said.

Festive offer

Police said Sharma’s videos also implicated a number of SDMs and Traffic personnel, many of whom of whom were suspended after he caught them on camera seeking bribes.

Sharma, a property dealer from Southwest Delhi, had launched his sting operation in 2002. His tapes led to the suspension of 115 policemen in 2008, most of whom were caught accepting bribes from Blueline bus drivers. A second round of sting operations resulted in the suspension of 30 police personnel.
