Brother vs brother in Barasat ward
BARASAT: The political enmity and subsequent violence in the run up to the poll does not care even a blood relationship. The Saturday's violence also scattered in Barsat civic areas and marked the poll battle between two brothers in ward no 9. The Congress turned Trinamool leader Arabinda Dasgupta has contested as a TMC candidate against his own brother Dipak Dasgupta, a Congress candidate.
The fights between two brothers in same family at ward no 9 had also developed a significance in Barasat civic polls. But the locals were shocked indeed with an alleged attack on Dipak by a group of outsiders after being instructed by his elder brother Arabinda.
While some voters complained to Dipak that they were not being allowed to the booth no 63 at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School to cast their vote, the Congress candidate rushed to the booth to find ousiders trying to capture the booth in the presence of Trinamool candidate. "It was around 1.30 pm while a group of 15 to 20 youths, all of whom were unknown faces, was terrorising voters to stay back from casting their votes. I rushed to the gang only to ask them to allow the voters in the booth. But they immediately pounced on me and beat me up severely in the presence of my elder brother," said Dipak.
The locals also said that they were taken aback while Arabinda even did not try to come his brother's rescue.
Dipak had to be hospitalised in Barasat district hospital and later discharged.
Arabinda, however, said "Somebody were trying to create ruckus in front of the booth during the poll and some local Trinamool supporters only tried to resist them for free and fair polls."
According to local sources, all the members in Dasgupta family were earlier known as active Congress activists and two brothers along with the family belong together.
"Even Arabinda's wife Manashi was elected as a Congress councilor from this ward no 9 in last civic polls. But this time Arabinda himself filed nomination as Trinamool candidate after he joined the ruling party barely 6 months back along with his wife," a local said.
