Imagine stepping into a foreign country to realise your long-cherished dream but eventually ending up encountering only troubles. The situation is worse when people from backward areas pull out all stops to reach their dream destination and then realise that they have made a wrong choice and helplessly hope to return home. Sounds scary?

Based on such real life experiences, Telugu filmmaker P. Sunil Kumar Reddy is all set to script his next film titled ‘Gulf’. More than 95 people have already shared their experiences through email gulfthemovie@gmail.com, a platform specially created for the purpose. “Once these stories are shortlisted, we will be flying to Gulf to interact with people and complete the scripting which might take a couple of months,” says the director at a programme organised in the city on Saturday.

In an effort to portray both the sides of the coin, the filmmaker says that the story of his new movie focuses on both positive and negative aspects of those who had set off on a new journey as immigrants. “There are about 20 lakh people from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana who work in Gulf. The movie helps in bringing out the experiences of women who have been to the foreign country in the hope of supporting their families working as maids or labourers. Unfortunately, they have been exploited and suffer endlessly at the hands of their employers,” says Sunil Kumar Reddy.

Scribes’ contribution

The director says that a number of journalists from across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are contributing to the movie. And that it will be more of a collaborative effort where a lot of people are involved in filmmaking. “We are visiting places like Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Srikakulam and creating awareness on the intricacies involved in illegal immigration as well,” says M.R.N. Varma, president of Uttarandhra Journalists Forum.

The film, supported by ‘Sukhibhava’ Krishnamurthy and a bunch of local artistes and journalists, is expected to be canned by year-end. Apart from the email id, people can also share their experiences through Facebook page: gulfthemovie.
