Officials pulled up over slow pace of flood-control steps

MLA concerned over delay in attending to complaints

April 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - MANGALURU:

Mangaluru South MLA J.R. Lobo on Saturday expressed displeasure over the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) not commencing monsoon-related drain clearing work and the lack of timely response to attend rain-related emergencies.

During a meeting with the Mayor and corporation officials here, Mr. Lobo said he might be forced to go public if the civic body did not act immediately.

Mr. Lobo was unhappy with the delay in attending to artificial flooding.

“The other day I got a call from a woman who was literally crying as all her household articles were in water. What answer should I give when I do not see any work happening even after notifying the problem,” he said.

He asked why the corporation was yet to attend to complaints from at least areas prone for flooding, including area behind Ashoka Service Station near Pumpwell and take up desilting work.

Mr. Lobo said, “With folded hands I ask you to take this task as a humanitarian problem.”

He asked officials to respond quickly to distress calls. The MLA also took exception to the enormous delay in issuing building completion certificates even if everything was in order or where there were very minor violations.

Dharmaraj from Infrastructure Development Foundation said the Town Planning officials did not grant the certificate as a column of his building was three inches thicker than the permitted level. “These are some of the lame reasons for not issuing completion certificate,” he said.

Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati directed Town Planning Officer Balakrishna Gowda to place the particular file before her.

Mr. Lobo asked Mr. Gowda not to keep applications for certificates beyond a fortnight if there were no violations in the structure.

Mr. Lobo also asked officials to prepare the detailed project report for construction of bus terminus near the Bhagwan Mahaveer Circle. He also reviewed work of construction of vegetable and fish market at Bejai and new markets at the Central Market, Bikarnakatte, Kankanady, Alape and Kadri.
