In a rare gesture, the Kodad Town Police have made fixed deposit of Rs. 40,000 in the name of Bhumi Shri, the one and half year old daughter of slain constable Mettu Lingaiah, here on Saturday.

Police personnel led by Inspector M.Srihdar Reddy presented the documents of the fixed deposit to the slain policeman’s wife Bhavani at the station premises.

Mr .Lingaiah (30) and Home Guard, Kummari Mallesh (30) were shot dead by SIMI operatives at Suryapet Bus station in the wee hours of April 2 during a regular frisking of passengers.

Inspector Y.Mogalaiah and another Home Guard Kishore also sustained bullet injuries, but recovered later.

Speaking to The Hindu , the Inspector said that the personnel of Kodad station have contributed Rs. 25,000 from their salaries and he has contributed the rest.

“The 10-year term deposit will have 91,000 maturity value, he added. Since the girl is just one and half years now, Mr. Reddy said that the amount could be useful for her education.

The 2011 batch constable was posted at Kodad Traffic Police station in 2012. Most of the personnel working with the station had worked with Lingaiah during his tenure here but he was deputed to Suryapet Station months before the incident on his own request. Lingaiah (30) was a native of Utkur village of Shaligouraram mandal in Nalgonda. The Kodad Inspector said that he in consultation with Police Officer’s Association were working on to make such deposit on the name of Home Guard, Kummari Mahesh's daughter soon since Inspectors and Sub-inspector's, under whom the Home Guard had worked, have come forward to donate some amount.
