An 18-member Indian Under-14 girls’ team, which is in Nepal for the Asian Football Confederation’s regional tournament, is stranded in Kathmandu following the earthquake. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) said the players were safe, and were expected to be brought back to Delhi by the Indian Army’s rescue team on Sunday.
The girls were preparing for their third place playoff match against Iran on Saturday when the earthquake struck.
AIFF officials could not speak to the players, and had to rely on WhatsApp for communication.
“The girls were shaken but the situation is under control,” an AIFF official said.
