Luke Shaw has been given a massive boost by Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal .

The teenage defender has struggled for fitness and form since his £27million arrival from Southampton last summer.

But Shaw showed glimpses of his pedigree in the 1-0 defeat by Chelsea – and van Gaal was impressed .

He said: “I believe in Luke so for me it wasn’t a surprise he played very well at Chelsea and I am very happy for him.

“It is, of course, the first season here for a 19-year-old boy and because he is still a boy he is still growing and maybe next year he will be an adult on the pitch.

“I really hope so because I believe in Shaw.”

Van Gaal is keen for his stars to finish the season strongly after admitting he has really missed Champions League competition this season.

He added: “I miss the Champions League, especially when I saw the matches this week. I miss it very much and I hope we can achieve our goal and play there again next year.”
