Sit out in style this summer

Here’s how you can have that perfect seating space in your garden or balcony this season

Summer noons can get very hot, but the evenings do tend to cool down a bit. And if you’re someone who likes to spend time in your garden or balcony with your cup of chai, interior designer Shipra Chenji offers some help on getting that seating area right.

Shady business: Whether it is a garden verandah or a balcony, you can always cool the area by using khus khus curtains or bamboo curtains. Dampen the khus khus curtains and place them where there is a lot of breeze. You can also use nursery shade nets, they keep the home cool and also help protect plants at home.

Furniture: An evening sit-out is not complete without a nice table and chairs. Though stone and metal sets look classy, they also tend to get heated soon. So avoid them. Instead, opt for the latest synthetic plastic set that looks like cane and it is also weather-resistant. They are not just comfortable, but also look rustic and nice.

Green gold: Fill the area with plants. If you have a balcony, indoor plants make for a great addition. You can also fill your garden with plants and water them in the evening, this will also keep the surrounding areas cool.

White wonder: If you want to change the look of the verandah or the balcony, paint them white or use nice white flowy curtains.

Breezy and effortless: If you still find the evening hot, you can always buy a garden fan. They come in all shapes and sizes and make summer evenings just perfect.

Humidify the area: Invest in a humidifier. Most of them also sprinkle water and make the area cooler. You can also add some fragrance like rose, lemon grass etc.. So the area is not just cool, but also fragrant.
