IPL8 CSK vs KXIP: Chennai seal big win over Punjab to top table

A great performance ensured Chennai Super Kings went on the top of the table with 10 points after defeating Kings XI Punjab by 97 runs.

Chasing 193 to win, Punjab were never in the reckoning as they managed to reach a meager 95 for nine in 20 overs.

Only Murali Vijay scored a decent 34.

For Chennai, Ravindra Jadeja picked three wickets while Ashish Nehra and Ravichandran Ashwin claimed two each.

Earlier, Chennai SUper Kings made use of some sloppy fielding from Punjab as Brendon McCullum smashed a 44-ball 66 while Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit 41 from 27 balls to reach a fine 192 for three in 20 overs.

Dwayne Smith (26), Suresh Raina (29) and Jadeja (18 not out) all played good knocks.

Dhoni remained unbeaten on 41 while Jadeja managed 18 as CSk reached a superb 192-3 in 20 overs.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS INNINGS

That's unlucky for Raina as Dhoni's straight shot clips the fingers of Karanveer Singh to hit the stumps at the non strikers' end. CSK 144-3 in 15.2 overs.

Suresh Raina run out 29 (25b 4x4 0x6)

McCullum succumbs after he is caught by Bailey in the deep. CSK 116-2 in 12.1 overs.

Brendon McCullum c Bailey b Patel 66 (44b 8x4 3x6)

Brilliant century for McCullum from only 33 balls. Gets it in style with a superb six off Johnson. His knock has put Chennai a commanding position. CSk 97-1 in 10 overs.

McCullum batting on 33 from 23 balls while Raina reaches eight with a boundary. CSK  74-1 in 7 overs.

Finally Kings XI Punjab can smile as Smith played on to give Anureet Singh the first wicket. CSK 50-1 in 4.4 overs.

22 runs coming from that over as Smith smashes two sixes and two boundaries. CSK 36-0 in 3 overs.

Great delivery from Sandeep bounces a tad extra to take the edge of McCullum but no one at first slip to take it. 14-0 in 2 overs.

Chennai bat first as Smith and McCullum open for Chennai as Punjab begin with spinner Karanveer Singh.

Dhoni turned lucky with the coin as he wins the toss and opts to bat first.

Chennai Super Kings, currently second in the Pepsi IPL8 standings, will look to stretch their lead from the rest of the pack, when they take on Kings XI Punjab at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Saturday.

CSK have won four of their five matches so far – their only defeat being against the Rajasthan Royals.

KXIP have two wins from five outings this season.

The two teams met on three occasions last season – twice in the league stage and later in the Playoff, and KXIP held their own in all the three matches.
