Falcons won't overlook receiver spot in draft, if right fit

With all the talk about the Atlanta Falcons adding an edge rusher in this year's draft, some of the discussion about the need at wide receiver has been overlooked.

Yes, the Falcons still have one of the league's top targets in Julio Jones, but they also cut ties with Harry Douglas and have maybe one good year left in 33-year-old Roddy White.

Two receivers familiar with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's scheme from his days in Washington -- Leonard Hankerson and Nick Williams -- were signed this offseason. Hankerson, however, is coming off a torn ACL and LCL. Williams has just five career games to his credit.

General manager Thomas Dimitroff was asked Friday about addressing the position in the draft.

"We're in a situation that we're very mindful of what our offensive firepower is," Dimitroff said. "In the past, we've been very focused on that, as you all know. We continue to think -- and I'm a firm believer and I know [head coach] Dan [Quinn] is -- that you need to keep the cupboards full. And you have to make sure that you're ready to move forward when people do move on.

"We're always going to be mindful of the key positions to make sure that we can provide a quarterback like Matt Ryan the opportunity to move the ball around the field. That's something that's important to us."

A couple of the names to key an eye on in the draft are Miami's Phillip Dorsett and Duke's Jamison Crowder. Dorsett had a private workout with the Falcons and Crowder visited the team's facility last week.

The 5-foot-9, 185-pound Dorsett, with his 4.3 speed and pass-catching ability, appears destined to shoot up the draft board. Mel Kiper Jr. had Dorsett going 16th overall to the Houston Texans in an alternating mock draft with fellow ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay. If Dorsett falls into the second round, the Falcons would be wise to jump on him, if available.

The 5-foot-8, 185-pound Crowder is projected as a fourth-round draft pick. He is more of a Wes Welker-type receiver with great quickness who should excel as slot receiver.
