VS Achuthanandan may skip state committee meet

Having been dropped from panel, he can be included at the behest of PB commission

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan will not be taking part in the state committee meeting at the AKG Centre here on Saturday.

Though he is a special invitee to the central committee, there is still no clarity within the party whether Achuthanandan could attend the state leadership meeting in that capacity.

The recent state conference at Alappuzha had dropped party veteran from the state committee. It had left one seat vacant in the committee, which party sources claimed was set aside for him.

However, the central leadership has pointed out the decision on inducting Achuthanandan into the state committee would be taken on the basis of the recommendations of party politburo commission looking into Kerala issues and in consultation with the state unit of the party.

The matter would also be discussed at the politburo and central committee meeting expected to be held in June.

Sources close to Achuthanandan said the veteran leader was not keen on pleading with the state leadership to induct him. At the moment he is unwanted in the state leadership and till Friday evening the central or state leaders had not invited him to attend the meeting.

They said Achuthanandan could make a surprise attendance at the meet only if Yechury or Kodiyeri Balakrishnan contacted him personally and insisted on his participation.

The state committee meeting, the first after the 21st CPM Congress at Vishakhanapatanam, will be attended by the newly elected general secretary Sitaram Yechury.

Politburo member S Ramachandran Pillai whose name also did the rounds for the top post, will take part in the meeting. The central leadership will report the major decisions taken at the Congress.
