Duo who ran amok in auto had murdered driver

Duo were arrested and handed over to Minjur Police for further investigations
Chennai: The duo who caused a ruckus in Tiruvottiyur on Wednesday by ramming a rashly driven auto rickshaw bus into a MTC bus, were part of a three-member gang that kidnapped and hacked an auto driver to death due to rivalry. They dumped his body in Minjur in Tiruvallur district and were returning to the city on Thursday when they were caught, police said.
It all started when a beat patrol team of the Tiruvottiyur police approached the auto rickshaw after it was parked idly for a long time on Ilaya Mudhali street on Thursday morning.
Seeing the cops, the trio started the vehicle and escaped through the narrow lanes.
The rashly driven auto hit a few two-wheelers parked along Kaladipet junction before it finally came to a halt, ramming into the bus.
Locals who rounded up the toppled auto rickshaw managed to catch hold of two persons — ‘Oil’ Balaji of Tiruvottiyur and ‘Manthai’ Velu of Tondiarpet and handed them over to the cops while their associate Vishnu gave the slip.
Deadly weapons were seized from the auto, which caused a flutter, and on investigation, it was revealed that the trio had killed an auto driver Rajesh of Kodungayur due to enmity.
According to police, Balaji who earned his moniker ‘Oil’ for his act of stealing oil from tanker lorries parked along north Chennai neighbourhoods had a tiff with Rajesh after the latter started stealing from his ‘territory’.
Rajesh who went for work on April 20th did not return home after which his family filed a missing complaint with local police.
Meanwhile, Minjur police found his body dumped amidst a grove on Thursday morning. Police said that the gang murdered Rajesh elsewhere and dumped his body in Minjur as the body was in a decomposed state when recovered by the cops. The two of them were arrested and handed over to Minjur Police for further investigations.
