NAGPUR: A blackbuck was killed in a road hit near Hudkeshwar-Pipla village while crossing the Outer Ring Road on Thursday morning.
Blackbuck is a protected species under schedule I category of Wildlife Protection Act 1972.
On Thursday, an unidentified speeding vehicle suddenly hit the blackbuck while it was crossing the road. The herbivore died on spot after receiving severe injuries and losing its left horn.
A team of forest officials led by range forest officer (RFO) Gajanan Dawre reached the spot and conducted panchnama. The carcass was sent for post mortem.
This is not the first time that a wild animal died after straying into city limits. Last month, TOI had reported how a spotted deer died after being attacked by a pack of dogs at Jaywant Nagar on Besa Road in the wee hours.
Blaming the ugly face of development for animal deaths, volunteers of Help For Animals group said that the area has become dangerous for wildlife animals.
The jhudpi-jungles near Besa, Ghogli and Pipla have many wild herbivores including spotted deer, blackbuck, sambar, blue bull, wild boar besides peacock.
Due to unplanned development of layouts that have been laid after procuring farm lands, these animals are forced to leave their original habitats and come inside city limits.
“In summers, the number of animals crossing the Outer Ring Road increases as they set out in search of water. However, they often fall prey to stray dogs or get knocked down by vehicles while crossing the road,” said the volunteers. They added that the group will soon raise the issue with the forest department.
