TRS plenary: KCR son takes centre stage, sulking nephew keeps it low

K Chandrashekar Rao was re-elected as the president of the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) for the eighth consecutive term at the party’s plenary session on Friday. However, it was the low-profile maintained by his nephew and Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao at the meet that became the talk of the day.

It appears that Harish, 42, who is very popular in the TRS rank and file is sulking after being sidelined by his uncle who did not involve him in planning and organising the plenary, the first after Telangana state was formed last year. KCR entrusted the task to his son K T Rama Rao, the IT Minister, and asked other ministers to coordinate with him to make the plenary a success.

Earlier, Harish used to be always at the forefront, be it at organising public meetings and massive protests during the Telangana agitation, or handling meetings. Rama Rao was hardly in the picture at that time.

Harish is also learnt to be unhappy that Rama Rao is being given more responsibility in the party, an indication that he is being groomed to take over from KCR. Rama Rao was to be made the party’s working president and the announcement was to be made during the plenary, but the idea was dropped at the last minute.

During the plenary Harish remained in the background on the dais, which is very unlike him.

“It is due to their efforts that today we have our Telangana. They made many sacrifices and we are enjoying the results now. From Delhi to every street in Telangana, it was TRS members and workers who fought and achieved Telangana,” the Telangana Chief Minister said.

NIA arrests accused in UK Indian embassy attack last year

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday said they have arrested a man, a resident of the UK, in connection with the violence at the Indian High Commission in London during a protest last year. The accused, identified as Inderpal Singh Gaba, has been arrested for carrying out unlawful activities during the protests that took place on March 22, 2023.
