The Public Works Department (PWD) has asked the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) to fund Phase III of the Barapullah elevated road project.

Citing how Phases I and II were financed under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) — which comes under the Urban Development Fund (UDF) — the PWD requested the MoUD to release Rs 1,200 crore for the project.

Additionally, the department has also asked the Ministry to release funds for the corridor improvement project from Mangolpuri to Madhuban Chowk and from Prembari Pul to Azadpur project.

In all, the PWD has requested the Centre to release funds to the tune of Rs 1,825 crore.

Earlier this week, PWD Minister Satyendra Jain had reportedly met UD Minister M Venkaiah Naidu to discuss these issues.

Festive offer

Earlier this month, Jain in an official communication to Naidu said, “Financial assistance from the MoUD is required for funding of road construction and improvement projects under the UDF and Central Road Fund (CRF) for construction of new roads, elevated roads and flyovers to decongest existing roads”.

“The proposal for seeking grant under the UDF for the corridor improvement project from Mangolpuri to Madhuban Chowk (Rs 398.63 crore) and Prembari Pul to Azadpur (Rs 224 crore) were sent to the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) but no reply was received. The proposal for seeking grant under UDF for construction of Barapullah Phase III (approximately Rs 1,200 crore) has also been submitted to the DDA. Your intervention for releasing Rs 1,825 crore under UDF is sought,” the communication stated.

A senior DDA official, however, said, “The fund for such projects is sought from the UDF which is under the Ministry concerned. It is the Ministry which decides on releasing the funds depending on the case put up by the DDA.”

The foundation stone for the Barapullah project, which will connect East and South Delhi, was laid by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh last December.

Work for the project, which is slated to be completed by December 2017, was to begin in March, but has been delayed, sources said.
