The 1,000-bed hospital is going to be the largest tertiary care institute in the eastern suburbs.

The eastern suburbs will soon get a new medical college in the premises of Govandi Centenary (Shatabdi) hospital, currently under expansion by the civic body, if the proposal for it gets an official nod from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The 1,000-bed hospital is going to be the largest tertiary care institute in the eastern suburbs. A meeting for the same was held at the mayor’s residence, Friday.

“We have MMRDA grounds nearly two km away from the hospital where infrastructure is available for the medical college. We are just waiting for the government’s approval,” said BMC’s additional municipal commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh. According to the Medical Council of India’s guidelines, a hospital must have at least 300 beds to run a medical college in its first year. The one at Govandi has close to 1,000 beds. According to Directorate of Medical Education and Research officials, an inspection will be carried out once the government gives a green signal.
