Households in the Latvian capital city Riga spend more on basic needs like food, housing and transport than residents of other Baltic capitals, according to a new study by the Swedbank Institute of Private Finances.

A family of four that owns a 70-square-meter apartment in a standard design Soviet-era house spends 44 percent of its disposable income on food, housing and transport in Riga, 41.5 percent in Vilnius and 25.5 percent in Tallinn, the institute's head Evita Jansone said citing the Main Household Expenses Study in the Baltic Countries.

In monetary terms, it means that a typical family spends 591 euros a month on food, housing and public transport in Riga, 513 euros in Vilnius, and 499 euros in Tallinn.

A similar study last year showed that a typical family of four spent 47 percent of its disposable income on food, housing and transport in Riga, 44 percent in Vilnius and 29 percent in Tallinn. Endit
