Mercedes-Benz have a new superstar in their engine line-up and they want as many models equipped with it. Obviously, we're talking about the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 powerhouse.
Yes, the same engine is the beating heart pumping horsepower and torque from under the AMG GT and C63 AMG's hoods. But that didn't stop rumors about Mercedes-Benz wanting to fit the G500 performance SUV with that particular engine.

One thing's for sure though: the G500 will not change looks anytime soon, so a switch in engine seems a lot more likely than a visual makeover, especially since the three-pointed star camaker has a fetish for the G-Wagen's rugged, hair-on-the-chest aura.

As you probably know, the ongoing Mercedes-Benz G500 uses a 5.5-liter V8 unit delivering 388 HP, but that won't last forever. Blame the incoming Euro 6 emission regulations expected to kick in this September, according to MB Passion.

The swap will see the G500 embracing a 422 HP-version of the V8 that - coincidentally or not - was first introduced last month in Geneva when Mercedes-Benz unveiled the monumental G500 4x4² concept. Was that a subtle hint from Mercedes? We can't know for sure.

What we do know is the G-Class is going to suffer a major refreshing session what will improve the SUV's technical features. Bound to hit daylight in 2017, the G-Wagen will be 200 kg (441 lbs) lighter and will sport a new batch of 3.0-liter inline six diesel and petrol bangers.

In addition, engineers will install a three- or four-link front suspension while updating the electro-mechanical steering system in the process.
