Chauhan gets 4 more days of cop remand
Guwahati: The Kamrup chief judicial magistrate (CJM)’s court on Thursday sent notorious car-lifter Anil Chauhan to another four days’ police remand in connection with two different police cases.
This was the third time that Chauhan was sent to police custody following his arrest on April 3. This time, he was remanded for cases of vehicle-lifting registered with the Fatasil Ambari and Gorchuk police stations.
Both police stations were allowed two days’ time to interrogate him.
Earlier, Congress MLA Rumi Nath was arrested on charges of aiding and harbouring Chauhan. She is currently in jail. Her estranged husband Jacky Zakir, who was arrested in connection with the same case, has moved the Gauhati high court for bail. Senior advocate Diganta Das is appearing for him.
Public prosecutor advocate Z Kamar said, “To unearth the facts about the interstate vehicle-lifting racket, with which Jacky was accused of being involved, and to avoid possible tampering with evidence, we argued against his bail plea. The court asked police to submit the case diary on May 7.”
A lower court granted anticipatory bail to policeman Moni Saikia, who was accused of helping Chauhan get away in a case a few years ago.
