With a full day’s charge allowing a travel of 150 km, students of Manipal Institute of Technology showcased their solar-powered passenger car during the Green Summit 2015 here on Thursday. As many as 27 students took two years to develop the two-seater car at a cost of nearly Rs. 25 lakh.

“It takes nearly six hours of sunlight to charge the batteries. After that it can travel for 150 km with a maximum speed of 60 kmph,” said Rishikesh Rao, a third-year engineering student who is a part of ‘SolarMobil team’ from the university that conceptualised the car.

The team will now seek to test the performance of the car in a global scale at the World Solar Challenge to be held in Australia in early 2016.
