The Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) is constructing an open air stage for conducting public functions and a playground in two separate plots close to one another at Beedinagudde here. The open air stage will come up in the area that housed a garbage dumping yard seven years ago.

With the fencing of the helipad ground at Adiudupi, the political rallies that used to be held there have had to be find other venues. To deal with situation, the CMC intends to build the open air stage with good facilities to facilitate holding of big rallies and public functions.

Though the construction of an open air stage started in 2013, it was stopped mid-way after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost power in the Council, and the Congress came to power.

The CMC has allocated Rs. 50 lakh in its annual budget for 2015-16 for the stage and playground. D. Manjunathayya, CMC Commissioner, said a committee had been formed to draw up a plan to develop both the open air stage and the playground.

“The committee will look into all aspects and come up with a development plan,” he said.

Meanwhile, land-levelling and land filling work is on near the marked area for the open air stage at Beedinagudde. “We are giving priority to the fencing of the entire of the open air stage. We will take the help of donors to build the fence around the area,” said P. Yuvaraj, CMC president.

Playground plans

Following the construction of the synthetic track at the District Stadium, the enthusiasts of cricket and other games have no big playground in the city left to play. To deal with this, a new playground will come up in the area south of the open air stage. “We will also make arrangements of parking vehicles also,” Mr. Yuvaraj said.

An approach road with storm water drains has been constructed in one section of the stage area. “The development of the open air stage and the area around it and the playground are both essential needs,” Mr. Yuvaraj added.
