Heavy rainfall, accompanied with hailstorm, damaged many banana farms in Yamasandi and Chokanahalli villages of Belur taluk on Tuesday. Susheelamma, who owns a banana farm at Yamasandi, said she suffered a loss of up to Rs.. 3 lakh due to hailstorm. “The crop was ready for harvest. The hailstorm ruined the crop, causing me a huge loss,” she said.

Hailstones fell on roofs of many houses in the taluk.

A farmer, who owns a nursery at Chokanahalli, collected at least three buckets of hailstones that had fallen into the nets that had been spread to cover the saplings.

Officials of the Revenue Department on Wednesday visited the villages and assessed the loss caused by rains.
