Vani, an engineering first year student in the IIIT at Idupulapaya in Kadapa district, attempted suicide by jumping from the college building on Thursday.

Vani, hailing from Kukkalaguntla village in Yerpedu mandal in Chittoor district, suffered severe injuries including fracture of her right leg and left hand, and was admitted to RIMS hospital in Kadapa.

Following a charge that the girl took away cash and mobile phones of other students, IIIT officials admonished her and took back about Rs. 1,600 from her. Peeved at the incident, Vani allegedly slashed her hand with a piece of glass and informed her parents.

When her parents came to the campus and chided her, the girl student jumped from atop the college building, resulting in severe injuries.

Doctors described her condition as serious.
