2 killed in wall collapse as rain wreaks havoc

A woman and her daughter were killed when the wall of their house collapsed following sudden rain at Mallareddypalli of Kambadur mandal in Anantapur district on Wednesday. Standing crops were damaged in several mandals in heavy rain in Kadapa district.

Isolated rainfall was reported in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana owing to an upper air trough running from Telangana to south Tamil Nadu across Rayalaseema, extending up to 1.5 km above the sea level, according to the Indian Meteorological Department.

Bobbili in Vizianagaram district recorded the highest rainfall of 33.2 mm, followed by Madakasira with 20 mm and Hindupur with 16.4 mm in Anantapur district and Parvathipuram in Srikakulam district with 11 mm. The earthen wall of a house at Mallareddypalli collapsed in heavy rain, killing Ramanjaneyulamma (45) and her daughter Swetha (7). The two were rushed to hospital but were declared “brought dead” by doctors. Heavy rain was reported in all mandals of Kalyanadurgam and Rayadurg Assembly constituencies.

In Kadapa, banana, mango, gingelly and betel leaf crops were damaged by gales. Hail caused damage to mango crop in Veeraballe mandal. While an excess rainfall of 527 per cent was recorded in Vizianagaram on Wednesday, the district recorded 54 per cent deficit in rainfall. All Rayalaseema districts received excess rain, with Nellore recording 226 per cent, Chittoor 201 per cent, Kadapa 338 per cent, Anantapur 232 per cent and Kurnool 106 per cent. While Krishna and Prakasam received normal rainfall, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Guntur, East and West Godavari received deficit rainfall.
