Five engineering students drown during swim in Bangalore quarry pit

Five engineering students two from Nepal drowned on Thursday while attempting to swim in a deep pond in a quarry at Bettahalasuru in North-East Bangalore.

The victims have been identified as Arun Chandra Shetty, Harish A, Nanda Kumar, residents of Bangalore, and K V Patel and Rajesh, who are natives of Nepal.

All the victims were fourth semester engineering students at the Sri Revana Siddeshwara Institute of Technology, Chokkanahalli near Chikkajala, near the Bangalore International Airport.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East division) Vikas Kumar Vikas said that the drowning occurred around 2.45 pm on Thursday afternoon when eight students of the engineering college ventured to the quarry at Bettahalasuru for a swim.

While three students – Nitin, Karthik and Anand – stood by the side of the pond the others ventured to swim in it, police said.

Festive offer

Two of the five victims went to a portion of the pond where the depth was nearly 70 feet and one of them started struggling to swim. All the others tried to save him and drowned as well, police said.

The police who were informed about the incident around 3.30 called a Fire and Emergency Services rescue team that fished out the bodies of four of the victims from the quarry. Efforts were still on to find the fifth body, DCP Vikas Kumar Vikas said.
