ISLAMABAD: A number of activities were organised by various organisations on Wednesday to mark Earth Day.

As part of the events, a documentary was screened at National Library and a walk at Marghazar Zoo, organised by  the Capital Development Authority (CDA) in collaboration with the Indus Consortium, an NGO.

The event kicked off with a symbolic 10-minute “green walk” around the zoo premises, led by the chief guest, CDA Chairperson Maroof Afzal. The walk was followed by a waste-collection exercise.

Students from Islamabad Model College for Girls (IMCG) F-6/2, Aims Education Academy, Islamabad Model College for Boys (IMCB) I-8/1 and G-6/3, Angelique School, Liberal Arts High School, CDA Model School and Modern Language School took part in the event.

The final activity was a painting and drawing competition highlighting pollution-related problems. Notable playwright and dramatist Haseena Moin distributed gifts among the first three position holders.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, CDA Model School Principal Tehseen Farah said these events were a regular feature in their school’s extracurricular activities.

Documentary screened

Meanwhile, a documentary screening of “If a tree falls: A story of the Earth Liberation Front (ELF)” was organised by the National Library of Pakistan at its Lincoln Reading Room in collaboration with the US Embassy.

The documentary portrays story of the life of Daniel McGowan more than the story of the ELF.

McGowan can be seen as a regular looking, mild-tempered guy who played an active role in ELF’s arson-related activities. He was later jailed for seven years through terror trials.

The ELF rose to fame as a radical environmental group in 1999. Its lead activists took to burning down timber factories and their offices to stop environmental destruction and wage a ‘guerilla war’ against organisations.

In all of its activities, the ELF made a point not to kill anyone. This is how the documentary constructs its ‘story of the ELF’, which was regarded as one of the top domestic terror threats in the US.

But was it really a terrorist group, the documentary asks.
