Kota Kinabalu: A total of 14 cycling enthusiasts will attempt to cycle over a distance of 1,385 kilometres from Sarawak to Sabah as part of promoting Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei as a cycling destination. The cyclists, aged between 35 and 64, will be accompanied by a support vehicle all the way from Kuching to Kota Kinabalu.

Its Organising Chairman Patrick Chang on Wednesday said the one-way cycling attempt dubbed Pan-Borneo Cycle Tour will start in Kuching on May 1 and is expected to end at the Sabah Tourism Board Office building between 12pm and 3pm on May 13.

"Two cyclists are from Sarawak, one of them a woman, while the rest are from Kota Kinabalu," he said, adding that one cyclist is Irish but living in Kota Kinabalu.

"The route will be the first time for all of us, not many have done this and I think this is the biggest group by far because normally it would be solo, twosome or threesome cycling," he said.

He said the objective of the tour was to have fun and leisure, visit new places, meet people, encourage healthy living as well as to promote Sabah, Brunei and Sabah as a cycling destination.

"I was looking for new challenges, life is short which is why I decided to initiate this tour, to have fun and be merry the healthy way while at the same time none of the cyclists here have met the Kuching riders, Jean Voon and Richard Kho, that would be joining us, so it is also about making new friends," he said.

The cyclists are Patrick Chang, Lung Dou Vun @ Basil, Lee Fu Chong @ Kelvin, Wong Kee Yau @ Anthony, Donald Monjohi, Donal Arnott, Michael Pai, Jean Voon, Richard Kho, George Ligunjang, Alex Voo, Kartika Zabad Bin Bacho Mohamad, Edward Lingkapo, Darren Jee and Nazlinker Sabli on support vehicle.

The route will take the cyclists from Kuching to Ranchan, Seratok, Sibu, Selangau, Bintulu, Niah, Miri,Tutong in Brunei, Limbang, Lawas, Beaufort and Kota Kinabalu.
