Ixopo nun’s rape shows extent of moral decline‚ says social development MEC

The rape of an elderly nun in Ixopo reflects “the decline in the spiritual and moral standards” in society‚ KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development Weziwe Thusi said on Wednesday.

The 86-year old nun – an Austrian immigrant who had been with the Sacred Heart Mission for 60 years — was found gagged and bound with a typewriter cord in her quarters‚ police said on Monday.

Thusi said the fact that the attack had taken place on the church’s premises showed the extent of the erosion of morals and the lack of respect for human life.

“It is urgent to bring morals and respect at the centre of our families and the society‚” said Thusi.

“What has happened to the nun and many other elderly women in the recent past is the worst thing a woman can experience and we all have to confront and defeat it by isolating those who do it and also educate the society about morals and values.”

Thusi also said that the crime showed that campaigns against substance abuse should be intensified.

“It has been proven that alcohol and drug abuse are one of the things that fuel these incidents.”

Thusi pleaded with the community to provide the police with any information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrator.
