The CPI and CPI (Marxist) on Wednesday organized separate agitations in Srikakulam district opposing both Sumitomo project in Polaki mandal and Atomic power plant in Kovvada of Ranasthalam mandal saying that both would cause pollution and lead to displacement of thousands of people in the district.

CPI State Assistant Secretary J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy, CPI Srikakulam secretary Chapara Venkata Rao, and others visited various villages including Thotada, Sanyasiraju peta, Gaurampeta and other villages to know their opinion over the Japanese project which was proposed in Polaki mandal. “We will form village committees in all areas to strengthen the movement against Sumitomo project. It will provide employment to a few people, but take away livelihood of thousands of people. That is why we decided to extend all the support to locals,” said Mr. Ramana.

Meanwhile, Paryavarana Parirakshana Sangham president Kuna Ramam, CPI (M) leader Bhaviri Krishnamurthy, CITU District General Secretary D. Govinda Rao and CITU-Ranasthalam Division president P. Tejeswara Rao staged protest in Ranasthalam opposing the nuclear power plant.

They alleged that the government wanted to vacate the people forcibly for construction of the nuclear plant.

“The government has not yet conducted public hearing here but wanted to continue land acquisition process. We will not allow the process since thousands of landless people, agriculture labourers, fishermen and others would lose their livelihood,” said Mr. Govinda Rao added.
