17 new PG courses in medical field

The Puducherry Government on Wednesday proposed introducing 17 new postgraduate courses in medical fields and veterinary medicine.

The Department of Higher and Technical Education has been allocated a sum of Rs. 210 crore in the budget.

In his budget speech, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said that the government had proposed to start postgraduate courses in the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Research Institute (IGMC&RI) from the next academic year.

Preparatory works have begun and the government has decided to start courses in eight clinical disciplines and four non-clinical disciplines.

The government has sought the permission of the Medical Council of India (MCI) to increase the MBBS seats from 150 to 200 in the Government Medical College in the next few years.

There is a proposal to start postgraduate courses in six disciplines in the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research (RIVER).

Course in horticulture

The government will be offering a four-year course in B.Sc Horticulture at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of Agriculture and Research Institute, Karaikal.

The Chief Minister also proposes to fill up posts in Arts and Science colleges in the Union Territory.

A State Higher Education Plan at Rs.181.40 crore for construction of buildings and infrastructure in higher educational institutions has been forwarded to the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

RUSA will be rolled out

The government will be rolling out the Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), a centrally sponsored scheme, in the UT to increase investment and enhance infrastructure and skill development in the higher education sector.
