Distribution of saplings marks observance of Earth Day

The tourists and local people proceeding to the hill station of Yercaud on Wednesday were taken by pleasant surprise when they were presented with saplings and cotton bags.

The occasion was the observance of Earth Day brought up by the three city-based hospitals - Appusami Hospital, Sri Gokulam Hospital and Salem Gopi Hospitals Private Limited.

G. Subbulakshmi, Superintendent of Police, distributed the saplings and a cotton bag to the people near the Forest Check Post on the Yercaud Ghat road at a brief function.

Ms. Subbulakshmi took the opportunity to explain to the people the importance of increase the forest cover for reducing the global warming and proper maintenance of ecology. “You should leave a worthy legacy to the future generation by planting saplings every now and then for increasing the green cover for saving the mother earth.

Trees not only remove harmful chemicals from the soil, but also help reduce the greenhouses leading to global warming.

The SP also explained the ill-effects of using the plastics and particularly the plastic carry bags which caused irreparable loss to the environment. Polluting the environment affected the entire society in a big way.

A copy of the day’s The Hindu was also distributed to the people along with the sapling and cotton bag.

The tourists and the others commended the gesture of the three hospitals for taking advantage of the Earth Day to demonstrate support for environmental protection and also for creating the much needed awareness among the common public on the need for protecting the mother earth.
