The 25 m x 12 m swimming pool is being constructed on a 2.5-acre plot at Kakkad in Puzhathi grama panchayat.

The swimming pool being built at Kakkad here as part of the SMILE (Sports Minister’s Infrastructural Leap to Excellence) project under the National Games Secretariat is nearing completion.

The 25 m x 12 m swimming pool with a depth of 1.2 m is being constructed on a 2.5-acre plot of the District Sports Council (DSC) at Kakkad in Puzhathi grama panchayat.

DSC officials exuded hope that the swimming pool with six lanes could be completed by May end. The construction was originally scheduled to be completed by March last year.

The Rs.50-lakh swimming pool was being built as part of the SMILE initiative of the NGS and the State government to give youngsters more facilities for learning swimming, they said.

The DSC had planned to use the land at Kakkad for constructing an indoor stadium, said M.K. Nasar, vice-president of the DSC.

Taking into account the fact that the town and nearby areas had only a few private swimming pools, the DSC had decided to use the land for constructing the pool, he added.

Though the work on the pool was nearly completed, construction of a dressing room and installation of a mini-water treatment plant remained to be completed. The Kerala Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organisation is the consultants of the project.

The indoor stadium at Mundayad here was built to host wrestling and basketball events of the National Games.
