The Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (S) will on Thursday try to put a brake on the ruling party’s moves to trifurcate Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) by urging the government to refer the Bill to a joint select committee. If the government does not accept their demand, they have decided to seek a vote in the Council. The ruling Congress does not have a majority in the Upper House.
Thursday will be the second day of a special session called to debate the Bill, which has been adopted in the Assembly by voice vote while a debate is on in the Council.
The Opposition parties are aware that a vote will be a temporary setback as even if the Bill is defeated in the Upper House, it would go back to the Assembly where it would not be difficult for the government to get the clearance. However, after getting legislature clearance, the Bill has to go to the Governor. Meanwhile, the Opposition parties are awaiting the High Court’s verdict on holding BBMP polls to chalk out their next course of action.
