Juhi Chawla: I am still not ready to play mother to a hero

Juhi Chawla, who has made a conscious choice of doing films that appeal to her, says that she is now in a position where she doesn’t need to go looking out for work and can wait till the right script comes along. Juhi, who was in Ahmedabad recently spoke to AT about her love for Bollywood, new age cinema, actors and more. Excerpts:
You have become selective about your roles these days.So is it a conscious choice or is it lack of strong roles?
I am rejecting more roles than I am accepting these days. I do agree that there aren’t too many roles available for actresses my age. And I am still not ready to play mother to a hero. That’s why I am not doing too many films. While on the other hand, actors our age continue to romance girls half their age. And the fact that the audience still accepts them says a lot about what’s a hit.

Bollywood is a close knit industry where everyone stands by the other in time of need. But on the other hand, people also say there is a lot of nepotism that exists.
Well, I don’t think Bollywood is the only industry where such things happen. You can see it everywhere. There are few people who would push their acquaintances for a role, but things cannot be all well everywhere. But I really love Bollywood as it is where I have achieved everything. And the best thing about this industry is that if you have the right intent and a strong will, you will surely find opportunity.
While you have been a part of various off-beat films, these days young actors are open to doing such films and that too at early age. What do you think about it?
There is a parallel sort of cinema developing these days, which is bold and experimental. And the success of such small budget and content heavy films has encouraged young actors to be a part of them. I see young actors experimenting with roles and films at an early stage of their career and it is commendable on their part. So it is heartening to see such actors taking bold steps towards good cinema
Do you think the new age actors are more secure when it comes to their career?
No actor can be secure when it comes to career. The film business is all about that one flop or one hit. With one hit you can be at the top, but it takes only one flop to hit rock bottom. And this is why it becomes even more credible that there are actors in Bollywood who are not afraid of doing films that they feel for and not follow an already tested path.
