MUMBAI: The Worli police on Wednesday arrested a head constable on charges of attempting to kill the wife of another constable.
The accused, Ankush Karanje, allegedly stabbed Nita Nawar (35) thrice with a kitchen knife. “Karanje had a grouse against Nita as she would intervene whenever he fought with his wife at home,” said a senior police officer.
Nita’s husband, Nitin, is a constable who is posted at chief minister Devendra Fadnavis’s official residence at Malabar Hill.
The police have arrested Karanje and recovered the knife used in the crime. The police said that the incident took place around 11.30am at Worli police lines. “Nita was at home with two other women when Karanje barged in. He started fighting with her and was carrying a knife. During the heated argument he attacked Nita with the knife. She sustained injuries on her hand and head. The other women present shouted for help and Karanje was later overpowered by other residents,” said a police officer.
Nita was rushed to Poddar Hospital where she received first-aid treatment. Later in the evening she was discharged from hospital. The police are investigating the case from all angles. “We arrested Karanje after the neighbours informed us. He is not cooperating with us. He has been booked for attempt to murder and will be produced before the court on Thursday,” said the officer.
