Do not cut off the branch on which you are sitting goes the old saying. Unfortunately, it seems Maniram, a farmer, in Bamna village of Jhansi district had not heard this adage. Maniram on Monday chopped off the branch of a tree on which he was sitting and died on the spot.

As recent thunderstorms had damaged Maniram's thatched house, on Monday, he and his brothers decided to repair it. While his brothers were repairing the walls, Maniram was given the responsibility of bringing some tree branches to repair the roof.

Maniram went to the outskirts of the village and started cutting the branch of the tree on which he was sitting despite villagers cautioning against it.

"We were going to our fields when we saw him committing the blunder. We also cautioned him and asked him not to do so. However, he did not listen to us and continued cutting the branch. We also raised an alarm but by the time others reached the spot he had fallen down along with the branch", Jokhulal, a villager, told mediapersons.

Maniram was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

"He had multiple fractures and died of internal injuries and bleeding", Santosh Kumar, the pharmacist of the community healthcentre, said.

Later in the day, the police sent his body for a postmortem. Maniram's family members were also shocked by the incident.

"We cannot believe this. He was mentally sound and also never consumed any kind of drugs or alcohol. We are surprised why he took this lethal step or what prompted him to do so", Chetram, the brother of Maniram, said.
