State adopts labeling rules for genetically engineered food

Associated Press

Food that has been genetically engineered will have to be labeled as such in Vermont under regulations adopted this month by the state attorney general’s office. The rules are an outgrowth of legislative action in 2014 that made Vermont the first state to require the labeling. After months of public outreach and comments from producers, retailers, and consumers, and after approval by the Legislative Committee on Administrative Rules, the attorney general’s office formally filed the adopted rule Friday, to take effect July 1, 2016. Attorney General Bill Sorrell said with the formal adoption of the rule, the state is giving ample time for food manufacturers and retailers to prepare for the law.
