The Thane Police Crime Branch arrested four men, including two aides of the fugitive gangster Ravi Pujari, for attempting to extort Rs 5 crore from a Thane-based builder.
Police said that the builder had received several calls allegedly from Pujari through an international number between August 11-27 last year, and numerous text messages demanding Rs 5 crore.
The Anti Extortion Cell of the crime branch first arrested Ambernath resident Kailash Pradhan (45) on March 14. Pradhan led the police to Kashiram Pashi, alias Kashi Pashi (41) of Thane, and Gaurav Sharma (34) and Hanuman Mhatre (50), both residents of Dombivali.

A number of firearms, knives and cell phones were recovered from their possession, the police said. “Mhatre is in the sand dredging and construction business, and Sharma is his partner. They would pass of contact details of prosperous builders to Pradhan and Pashi, who would then pass on the numbers to Ravi Pujari,” said NT Kadam, senior inspector, anti extortion cell.
