RAJKOT: After a bout of rains that brought some chill, the city sizzled at 44 degrees Celsius, the highest in the state that is reeling under intense heat wave conditions for the last three days.
Rajkot recorded highest maximum temperature for the second consecutive day. Temperatures also soared across the region and most cities and towns were scorching at above 40 degrees.
Amreli, Surendranagar and Bhavnagar recorded 42 degrees Celsius.
The heat wave has affected normal life across the region. While people are avoiding venturing out except for important work, the number of medical emergencies is also on the rise. Emergency services 108 are having a busy time attending to people suffering from heat stroke.
The only respite is in the evenings and nights when the mercury is dropping below 30 degrees Celsius.
Succor is not in sight as India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heat wave warning in Saurashtra and Kutch regions for next five days.
Local politicians too felt the heat of summer on Sunday when by-polls were held for two wards in Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC). Only 30 percent voters turned up for voting.
Dealing with heat wave conditions is becoming tough for people who were enjoying some unseasonal coolness last week after showers that were accompanied by hail and strong winds.
