(MENAFN- KNN India) After the famous Banarasi brocade or Banarasi sarees and handmade carpet of Bhadohi were given the GI tag, it's now the turn of Banaras Gulabi Meenakari craft, Varanasi wooden lacquerware and toys and Mirzapuri handmade dari to join the league.
GI registry Chennai issued the tags to these products, making the city of Varanasi a hub of the signature products protected under Intellectual Property Rights. GI registry certificates restrict others from marketing or processing a product in the same name. Human Welfare Association (HWA) with the support of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Lucknow, facilitated the artisans in getting GI tags.
GI tags were issued in 2009 to the famous Banaras Brocade saree and in 2010 to the handmade carpet of Badohi.
The Sahbhagi Welfare Samiti had applied to GI registry two years back in January 2013 for Banaras Gulabi Meenakari. Applications for Mirzapur handmade dari and Varanasi wooden lacquerware and toys were filed in October 2013 by Pooja Handloom Silk Utpadan Sahkari Samiti Limited, and Balaji Handicraft Cooperative Society Limited and Khilauna Udyog Sahkari Samiti Limited respectively.
50-60% pink enamel products are exported to Europe, America and Gulf countries via Jaipur, Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi and approximate annual turnover of pink enamel business is Rs. 3-5 crore.
A 20-30% enhancement in export is envisaged in wake of the the GI certification to these exclusive products of this region.
About 15 lakh people doing a business of about Rs 8000 crore annually are involved with the five famed products covered under Intellectual Property Rights. (KNN/SS)
