LAHORE - The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has demanded from the government and the parliament to take ownership of the challenges the country is facing, rather than ceding space to the establishment.
A statement issued at the conclusion of the HRCP Council and annual general meetings on Sunday said: “HRCP is concerned over a range of human rights challenges afflicting the country. Some of these have reared their head in the last few months, but others have decidedly grown worse since the council met in October last.
“We believe that it is particularly crucial to attend to the issues without delay. Intimidation of human rights defenders and journalists remains widespread and the intelligence agencies’ visits to civil society organisations’ offices have been creating an atmosphere of fear.”
