BSP chief Mayawati on Sunday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “overlooking” his “rajdharma” of finding solutions to the problems faced by the farmers for foreign trips, and asked all MPs and MLAs of her party to donate their one month’s salary directly to the peasants and not through the government.

Accusing the central and the Uttar Pradesh governments of indulging only in formalities, Mayawati claimed in a statement that she had taken the decision to help farmers through MLA and MPs to stop them from committing suicide in absence of help from the government.

“The farmers are going through a bad phase due to unexpected rain and hailstorm, but despite reports of suicides the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government were involved only in paperwork.”

She said Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav were busy touring foreign nations, when the farmers have been forced to take the extreme step.

“Instead of following rajdharma, PM Narendra Modi was forcing his MPs to propagate his foreign trips. Like the Congress-government, overall economic policies of Modi government seemed to have failed in removing problems like poverty, unemployment and inflation,” Mayawati alleged.

Festive offer

She said much-publicised crop insurance has not been able to compensate the farmers.

The BSP chief also alleged that the NDA government was more worried about the affluent NRIs, than the poor and unemployed in the country.

The BSP will hold a day-long dharna at every district headquarters in the state on Thursday.

The protest is against the proposed changes to the land acquisition law, the “apathy” of the state and the central governments towards farmers suffering from damage to crops and “deteriorating” law and order under the SP government.

All senior party leaders and zonal coordinators have been assigned responsibilities by Mayawati to make the dharna, which is party’s first big political mobilisation exercise after the Lok Sabha polls last year, a successful show.

BJP MLAs, too, will donate salaries

BJP has also directed its MLAs to donate their one month’s salary to farmers affected by hailstorm and unseasonal rain. Dharampal Singh, BJP’s deputy leader in the UP Assembly, said the party has decided that all the MLAs would donate their one month’s salary for the farmers.
