Over 2 Tonnes of Cocaine Found on Ship Off Martinique Coast - Reports
01:15 GMT 19.04.2015 (Updated: 01:35 GMT 19.04.2015) French customs officers have confiscated about 2.25 metric tons of cocaine from a ship in the eastern Caribbean Sea, not far from the island of Martinique, the Finance Minister of France, Michel Sapin, has announced.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Sapin praised the work of the customs officers, saying that the success of the "difficult and risky" operation demonstrated a high quality of "international cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking," according to a statement quoted by the French BFM TV channel on Saturday.
Three suspects were arrested on the sailboat, which has falsely raised an American flag about 200 kilometers (124 miles) off the coast of Martinique, the statement said.
According to an anonymous official from the French National Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation (DNRED) cited by BFM TV, the suspects included two Spaniards and one Venezuelan.
In 2014, French customs officials have seized a total of 6.6 tonnes of cocaine, according to the TV channel. A record seizure was made in November, 2006, when 4.3 metric tons of cocaine were found aboard a Panamanian cargo ship off the coast of Martinique.
