The District Planning Committee (DPC) will send a proposal for desilting waterbodies in the district.

Replying to an appeal by a member of the DPC, Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan directed the committee to prepare a detailed proposal for government’s approval.

The members who participated in the meeting expressed their concern that the DPC meetings were convened as a ritual instead of discussing issues that affected the people. Purposeful debates and decision should take place at the DPC meeting, they said.

A few members alleged that the people whose names were not found in the National Population Registry were denied permission to enrol for Aadhaar cards.

Plea

The members urged the administration to introduce an effective solid waste management system through local bodies in the district.

It was also announced in the meeting that a few rural libraries would be opened if the local bodies allotted sufficient land for construction of buildings, and if there were at least 100 members and two patrons for each library.

S.R. Sekar, chairman, Kadayal town panchayat, urged the district administration to take immediate measures to provide protected drinking water and proper road facilities to the tribal areas coming under the town panchayat.

Poor participation

Though the district has four municipalities and 55 town panchayats, only a handful of local body chiefs attended the meeting.

The meeting was presided over by M.S. Sarathamani, Chairman, District Planning Committee and District Panchayat. P. Periyasamy, Project Director, District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), among others participated.
