Friday’s school roundup: Justin Kerhulas, St. John’s Prep baseball blank Newton North

Two infield hits and a ground ball up the middle that barely sneaked past pitcher Justin Kerhulas’s glove were the only hits the St. John’s Prep senior allowed Friday en route to a 5-0 victory over visiting Newton North.

“I was locating the fastball really well. It was coming out of my hand nice and I was really feeling good today,” said Kerhulas, who pitched a three-hit complete game without any strikeouts (he walked two). “Our defense is one of the best in the state. When you have them, you don’t really need to worry about strikeouts. You just need to pitch to contact.”

The Eagles (5-0), didn’t make an error and relied on timely hitting, scoring three in the first two innings and adding two runs in the sixth inning.

The problem for the defending Super 8 champion Tigers (1-1) were the free base runners allowed by starter Theo Resnick.

The senior, who was a key part of the Tigers’ championship team last year, walked or hit four of the first nine batters, and three of those runners ended up scoring.

Other than that, Resnick pitched exceptionally, relying on an array of offspeed pitches to stike out five while matching Kerhulas in scoreless frames from the third to the fifth inning.

Seniors Dan Trulli (RBI single) and Keith Leavitt (two-run single) were responsible for the Eagles’ early production. Senior Nick Latham (3 for 3, walk) hit a sixth-inning double, which was the only extra-base hit for either team.

“I have a lot of respect for Newton North, that’s a team that doesn’t lose much,” said St. John’s Prep coach Dan Letarte. “I’ve always felt to be the best, you have to play the best, and [Newton North] had been the best for a couple of years now. It’s great to play and get a win against that team.”
